Chablis Garnier & Fils, Chablis 1er Cru "Mont de Milieu 2013
Simply gorgeous Chablis, but far from simple. This Premier Cru is as good as many Grand Crus that we’ve tried. The bespectacled brothers Xavier and Jérôme Garnier have carved a complex salt, lime, pear, honey, mineral and buttered toast infused Chardonnay out of this incredible terroir.
Mont de Milieu is considered one of the finest Premier Cru sites in Chablis. It is located a stones throw southeast of those top Grand Cru sites on the same side of the Serein River. It is actually the old site of the border between Burgundy and Champagne. The limestone-rich soils guarantee the ageability of these wines and the slightly warmer climate makes the wines some of Chablis’ richest. Hand harvested Chardonnay from 35 year old vines has been fermented with natural yeast and aged in a mix of stainless steel (30%) and older French oak barrels for 12 months. The stainless steel maintains the purity while the oak adds the complexity of gentle spices, delicate wood and fresh cream. The wine is made using organic principles, unfortunately due to the proximity of non-organic neighbours in Burgundy Xavier and Jérôme Garnier will not be able to attain certification.
